“The Lord Is My Shepherd” -Psalm 23
FOCUS(the core of the content to be communicated)
The shepherd boy David who grew to be a warrior king is the same David who as a young man took down Goliath
(see 1 Samuel 17). His confidence in God was so strong as he ran toward Goliath that he knew it was Goliath, not him,
who would lose this battle. As a shepherd, he had experiential knowledge that God was always more than able to do
what needed to be done. In fact, David referred to his shepherding days & the times he rescued the sheep under his care
to convince Saul he could defeat Goliath.* David had a proven track record because His shepherd had a perfect one.
While this psalm is often read at funerals, it is meant for the living to be lived on this side of the grave. In ways we’ve
never known before, may these verses ring even stronger for us because we know the Lord who is the Shepherd is Jesus.
David never knew Jesus.
Because the Lord is Jesus & He is our shepherd, we have …
1. provision, restoration & direction.
Each one is an ongoing & life-giving / life preserving need. - Psalm 1:1-3
2. peace & protection, confidence & abundance, a present & future hope.
To know this is true of those He shepherds is a call to total trust. Psalm 1:4-6
